The Blanket Color That Makes My Couch Feel Like A Different Room
Same couch, same lamp, same everything, just a different colored blanket thrown over the back of it. I did not expect one throw to change how I actually use a room, but it did.
Read the pieceI am not a colour expert. I am just extremely nosy about paint.
Nine years ago I bought a flat with north facing windows and a landlord's white ceiling, and I have been quietly obsessed ever since. Not with theory. (I did try. The colour wheel and I are not close.) What I actually care about is the practical bit: why a swatch that sang in the shop goes flat on the wall, why one grey feels like fog and the next one feels like a hospital.
So this is where I keep the notes. Palettes that worked, palettes that absolutely did not, and a running tally of how much the light changes everything between March and November.
Eight colours I keep chasing
"They were also completely forgettable, and I realized after about a year that I never once reached for one with any excitement."

How I read a colour
Three habits that have saved me more repainting than any theory ever did.
Look at it flat
A swatch held up against the wall lies. Put it down on the floor, in the same room, and check it again at noon and at six.
Name the undertone
Every soft colour is leaning somewhere. If you cannot say which way it leans, you will not be able to place anything next to it.
Give it one dark thing
Pale schemes go flat without an anchor. One properly dark object holds the whole soft palette up.
